The DAVIDSON family history is an interesting one, complete with a surname change from DAVIS to DAVIDSON. We believe there are many descendants in other parts of the country who might be related — it is hoped we find them some day.
James Davis was born in Northern Ireland 1794, we believe and arrived in Nova Scotia between 1825-1832. He was accompanied by his wife, Nancy Ann KIRKER, born 1796,d.o. John Kirker. James and Nancy Davis had one son before they came to Nova Scotia.
Nancy’s brother, James Kirker, born 1785, also arrived with them and married Mary Smith, born 1804, Necum Teuch, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. James Kirker was granted land at Quoddy — it is not known if all lived together, or if there were separate grants of land.
When James Davis died Feb 24, 1881 at Quoddy, he was buried on property owned by James Kirker and known as “Kirker’s Field”. Nancy (Kirker) Davis died after 1881 at Ecum Secum, Guysborough County — her body was transported by boat to Quoddy for burial beside her husband. At the present time, the land known as “Kirker’s Field” is overgrown and with no trace of graves.
I. James and Nancy (Kirker) Davis had seven or more children, with research not completed for all except HANNAH and JAMES — family history notes invited!

Hi Crystal,
If you are still on this site and doing research on the “Davidson” family, you can reach out to me. My grandmother “Flora Charlotte Davidson” was the daughter of James Thomas Davidson III so I have some pictures and info that may be of interest to you.

I research Kirkers worldwide and am, at present, concentrating on the Armagh Kirkers. They are pretty thin on the ground with only 13 households recorded in the Griffiths Valuation of 1864. Many emigrated. I have questions….. one that springs to mind is where is James and Nancy’s father’s name recorded – death certificates? Thank you.
Hi Karen,
Muriel passed away in 2008 and no one has carried on her research as far as I know. She was the wife of my great uncle “William Lewis Davidson” We had many long conversations over the phone but I was just getting into the ancestry research and did not value or record the relevance of her tidbits of information as much as I would now! I too am having trouble with the Kirker line. I have no documented proof of John and Nancy’s father being “John Kirker” other than what Muriel had told me. If you find any proof, I would love to know and see what you find. I will reach out to Lynden and Michelle Cowan in Canada to see if Muriel left any records that they may be able to find for us.
My wife (Barbara Frederick LIvingston) is a great great grandaughter of James Davis Sr (1794 – 1881) as shown below.
James Davis Sr (1794 – 1881) 2nd great-grandfather of wife
James Davis Davidson Jr (1833 – 1929) son of James Davis Sr
Vaughna “Vonnie” Giffin Davidson (1883 – 1977) daughter of James Davis Davidson Jr
Ruth Virginia Sponaugle (1926 – ) daughter of Vaughna “Vonnie” Giffin Davidson
Barbara Lynn Frederick (1950 – ) daughter of Ruth Virginia Sponaugle
Viginia Sponaugle married Jack L Frederick in 1946. They are the parents of Barbara my wife and her sister Susan Frederick La Kosh.
Virginia was born in 1926 and is 91 and living in St. Louis as my wife and I.
I have been using Ancestry for about 8 years and am now working on my wife’s family in depth.
