This site is a refreshed version created by my grandmother, Muriel M. Farquhar. She was a dedicated genealogist who spent much of her time helping others discover their family trees. I am amazed that people are still contacting me more than a dozen years after her death to tell me how much she meant to them. I have been quite busy researching other lines of my family tree, but every now and again I get back to my Nova Scotian roots.
I would love to continue my grandmother’s important work and wish to eventually do a complete overhaul of this site. A lot of the stuff here (particularly census info) can now be easily accessible on major genealogy sites like Ancestry, so I think it’s time to refocus what this website needs to be. I’d love to hear from fellow family historians and learn what you all would like to see in this space. This site could become more of a blog, a user forum to share knowledge and research, or something else entirely. I’m looking for input from you guys! Please feel free to write a comment below or email me at contact@nsgenealogy.ca.
Sincerely,
Michelle
Dear Michelle,
Thanks for all you (and your grandmother’s) great work. I found information on the death by drowning of one of my relatives here today!
Best,
Judy Cook
You are very welcome, Judy!
I am so grateful to have come across your site on McGowan family in doing my own ancestry search! Just want to fill in a blank for you re. Samuel Freeman’s wife as they appear in the Freeman Families of Nova Scotia. James Freeman’s parents were Samuel Freeman (1715-1783) and Mary (Mayo) Doane (1721-1811). She was his second wife and is buried at Port Medway Cemetery. I noticed you were missing the family name for her. I hope this is helpful to you. I am a descendant of Josiah Freeman and Mary A. McGowan. We are retracing our family roots (McNayr and Freeman families from Springfield) and will be in the area on Canada Day. Looking forward to this vacation!
Thanks so much for keeping this available. It provided history that added richness to our quest to preserve memories of and for our family.
Thank you so much for publishing Simeon Perkins Diaries- Captain Samuel Mann did much transporting for Simeon Perkins and associates.
Captain Samuel’s twin daughter Mary b. 1802- married my great great grandfather -Abijah Cove..she was later widowed and came to Ontario with family – I found where she is buried in 1867 and in 1936 I was born not far from there.
I passed by that cemetery most of my life not knowing she was there- until researching the Mann family and found her final resting place.
Thank you so much for printing these diaries- Samuel was a great seaman and was glad to hear of his trips etc in Simeon’s Diaries.
Thelma
I wish to posthumously thank the late Susan Hill for her help online from Nova Scotia to me here in Ontario. She got my research in the Cove as well as Mann families off the ground from my running around in circles here in Ontario. She did wonders to get the research started for me and I will be forever greatful to her.
Thank you Susan.

I haven’t even begun to go through the site but your easy access to the Perkins Diaries is a godsend! Thank you so much. I’ll try to help you out as I move through the material.
My search involves William Jackson who had ties to Cornwallis, Kings Co and to Queens Co. I have some unverified early information and some useful later information. Now I have to find the middle bits and connect them!
William George Jackson or perhaps George William Jackson Cornwallis, Kings Co ca. 1784, married 2nd wife Jerusha A. Kinsman, Cornwallis, Kings prior to 1820. They had three known children: William George Jackson b 1820, Sophia b ca 1825 and another daughter. William George (son) m Eliza Little, Liverpool ca 1851; she d. a few years latter and he m. Olivia Cobb, also Liverpool. They had numerous children.

Hello Michelle;
The last time I say Muriel was at Will Pinder’s funeral. My grandfather was Lloyd Carl Davidson. Muriel and I talked about the family at that time but unfortunately, and she shared some family history with me but unfortunately, she passed before we could share more detail.
Did Muriel leave all her family search work with you? I would like to share information but I’m sure I need to establish my relationship first. Please email me to discuss.
Thanks in advance.
